A simple question when growing vegetables from seed why do you have to go from a plug or seed tray to a 3in pot and then to their permanent site why not in the case of my tomatoes can I not go from the original small yoghurt pot to their permanent site in the greenhouse.
In the case of a tomato in a yoghurt pot-you can plant it directly. Plugs/seed trays are slightly different.
Thanks that will make life a little easier and save some time
Sorry forgot to add what is the difference if you use one of the trays with 12 compartments than using a yoghurt pot.
One of the golden rules in growing plants of all kinds is not to restrict the root growth of your plants (called becoming 'rootbound).
By all means plant in small pots but what do you do if the weather turns nasty and your plant roots are starting to curl round the sides of their small pot. Pot them into a larger pot as an interim measure until you can plant out in better weather . Easy Peasy. Cheers, Tony.
So if going into a green house for tomatoes cucumber etc it makes no difference then
One of the reasons why you pot on tomatoes is ever time you put into a bigger pot you bury it deeper so roots form from the stem giving you a stronger plant.
So from seedling, you pot on-deeper-final pot- deeper- some do an intermediate potting on as well.
The final potting on should take place just as they are coming into flower-once again a lot of growing is about timing to get the right plant healthy and growing when the conditions-light and temperature- are right
Thanks for the info. It looks like I will continue going from pot to larger pot to final spot.
The other reason for the double transplant of tom seedlings is that the transplanting gives the root system a wee shock - a wee jolt, if you will - which stimulates them.
