Hi, after a bit of advice on growing french beans, runner beans, courgette and cucumbers.

I previous years I have tended to grow all of the above from seed indoors, potting on, moving into an outdoor greenhouse and then into raised beds etc at about the end of May / early June.

Last year I lost most of my courgette and cucumber plants after I planted them into the garden - I think it was damping off. Had to end up buying plants from garden centres.

My runner beans and french beans got a little bit to big / spindly before I planted them out and didn't crop all that well - although i think that was because i didn't see a single bee in the garden until Aug/Sep time.

My question is the around the pros and cons of doing as I have described above, compared to planting seed straight into the garden where they are to grow and hopefully crop!! Tempted to try something diffferent this year.

    Lucy

It does depend a bit on whether you have late frosts in your area. Where I am I would not dare plant bean seeds or put out bean plants or courgette plants until early June.

So, to have plants up and running before then I start them off in the greenhouse. But you will know your own area best. Some years, with hindsight, I realise I could have put them out much earlier. Some years I missed a late frost!

But here is a good tip. In late Spring frosts only occur on windless nights so if you lay fleece or even sheets of newspaper over potato plants they will be protected.

Poppy, I have supplied the page of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú guide regarding your question, on the bbc television message board, since we are losing this one soon. I hope it's useful!
