    Hi all,

I decided recently that i was bored with curvey borders. It just didnt look neat and decided a new formal look was required. So i sectioned of an area closest to the back door and enclosed it with baby boxus leaving a gap just to enter the rest of the garden. I also straighted my border making to long border both sides of the garden.

No whilst this looks better in my view and makes the garden look longer, i feel that a little something more is needed.

Does anyone have any ideas ?

Back around Easter I redid my back garden, based around on the concept of a 'zig-zag' to maximise perception of width.

    Just completed ground works -

    Colin,
I would give you an "A"+ for that it looks great.
Most people for some reason put the path to the back of the garden straight up the middle usually because a clothes line is there.
You may find it a good idea to set off up one side which could have pots of plants at the fence side then cross over eather straight or diagonal and up the other side, you could cross a couple of times making small specific plant plots.
It all depends on the size of the garden fences are usually a good place to put fruit, that is the sunny side, the shaded side can be very good for some plants.
Putting a path up the shade side then lifting the bed to the side a couple of feet with a wall or wood gives you a raised bed for say, salad foods or smaller plants with colour.
Take a look through some charity shops they get lots of gardening books and some for planning a garden or to change one.
    Good Luck, Frank.

    Some good replies thanks.

Here's the garden from the back patio, then a picture from the back door with the new enclosed boxus area. The plan is to patio this to form a seating area. The rest of the garden, about 50f has a stepping stone path, right down the middle as you say but im bored with this also. Everything else now is straight so the curved path doesnt fit.

    Nice selection of plants there.

You're right, the eye follow the stepping stones right to the back of the garden and you 'miss' the side borders.

I'd remove the grass on the house side of the box and that as 'garden room' with area to sit out etc. and maybe a small water feature. There'd be room once the bushes on either side are under control smiley - winkeye

Where you have the box, run a divider across the garden to create a second 'room' and put in an archway to walk through. The division could be 1m trellis, then rope swags between posts on which to grow roses\clematis.

At the far end of the garden, put up a simple pergola to create height\privacy and divert the eye from the houses beyond. Keep the grass, but narrow this and widen and straighten the borders on each side.

Just to add, going by the neighbours parasol the aspect is south or west.

The back wall of the house is a bid stark with just the wee pot. I'd look at lifting a few slabs or putting 'planting pockets' into the concrete and maybe having some rosemary\ lavender there; maybe bay trees either side the patio doors?

The extreme back of the garden look like a DIY\garage area. If you did go for a pergola across the garden, trellis between the rear posts would hide all the mish-mash - is that a door? smiley - smiley

Thanks! I did the front too! The ground works were done in the summer, so the garden hasn't 'knitted together' to the same extent as the back.

Before, neighbour had gone for gravel in a big way and I as fed up trying to keep my lawn looking half decent -

After - Formal layout and a bias towards dry garden planting

    Brilliant Colin and Grinch!

If only I had your problems! I dag out 50 tons of very fine top soil, to find a well cover, and also found a Heap Kiln 18thC outline, quite a lot of clay and lime around its walls and foundations.

I now have to decide how to use about 500 second bricks to make a feature of the kiln area and well cover. I dag out the bricks during the excavation, at the same time as a hundredweight of 19thC glass and rusty tins, from their rubbish dump. All clear now!

The old septic tank double chamber, I filled in the drainage chamber and use the sealed chamber for a few very happy Koi.

Your problems? Bliss! No pics sorry. Hard labor yes!
