I've been thinking of joining because of the magazine. IS it any good?

    Hi Swedboy,

It's pretty 'grown up' and serious, in comparison say to Gardener's World mag, to which I subscirbe. There is usually something interesitng in it to read. I would liken it to the National Trust Mag that you get if you're a member there too. Yvie

I was a member for a while and agree that the magazine is more serious than some others. But it has pages and pages of adverts, which is what put me off eventually.

Yes it made a good read, but apart from one project (training a wisteria as a standard) I never actually made use of any of the information and in the end the collected back-copies were just taking up shelf space.

It's an expensive way to get a magazine unless you intend to use the other benefits of the RHS. Definitely more detailed than GW mag is these days. Articles on people's gardens & places. Often good ones about certain species of plants, usually relevant to the time of year. A section on 'what-to-do-now'. Although you actually get it slightly ahead of the actual time- ie mag in August tells you what to do in Sept, but I think GW does that too. Also some bits on problems etc. True, loads of adverts, just as NTrust. Could you try & get hold of a copy to see if you like the style before you decide? J.

    I'm not a subscriber.

However, you can see the contents, of the current issue, and lots of back issues, here:

You can see typically, four sample articles from each issue, in full. They are presented as PDF files, so it's not quite as convenient as a printed magazine.

There is also 'extra on-line content', several extra articles per issue, which is visible to anyone. For example, for October 2011, there is a video of Nigel Slater talking about squashes. I don't expect you get this video with the printed magazine (unless they include a DVD!).

You could try emailing membership@rhs.org.uk to see if they would send you a copy to see if you liked it.

At least with the RHS magazine all the adds are grouped together and don't pop up in te middle of the articles.

It covers news, new plants, visits to gardens, articles on specific plants or groups of plants, news on plant trials, what's going on at the RHS gardens and associated gardens and so on. It's well written by professional horticulturalists and/or horticultural journalists.

The pluses are - free access to RHS gardens and some associated gardens, members' day tickets to RHS shows, info and access to events organised at RHS gardens, a wider database access in the Plant Selector and Plant Finder features on their website and free advice from their experts if needed - pests, diseases, soil problems, and so on and you can apply for seeds from their gardens.

Try it for a year and see how you get on. Much better than GW and, though more serious, it is not at all stuffy.

They are doing a 12 issues for nine and I am very tempted to do it. It is just 3 quid an issue so I am very tempted to try it. I'll have a look at the sample issue and see what I make of it.

the RHS is a marvellous organisation and well worth joining but possibly only if you live near enough to Wisley or one of their other gardens Rosemoor(?) and so on. There is one in Devon I went to, to try to get the most out of the membership.

The mag for itself is not worth the joining fee, since there are indeed so many other mags on the market, although if they are selling them as a set of 12, then you could sit down one weekend and read the lot.

It is very nearly a scientific journal, although the pleasure of reading , and finding out more about flowers, betrays its seriousness.

Wisley is a blissful place. Many happy days have we had there.

I'm with Obelixx on this one!

It is one of those memberships that if you use the facilities it has to offer then you are quids in.

When you consider that entry in to hundreds of gardens throughout the UK is free this can pay for the membership itself.

Add to that the other things Obelixx mentioned then it is well worth the money!

Plus of course you get the magazine you want!

Try it for a year I did!

I was given a years entry as a Xmas present many years ago and I have remained a member ever since so my advice is..........go for it!

The magazine is being steadily 'dumbed down' I'm sorry to say, so is now very much the same as the 'glossies' in WH Smith.

All about 'instant' effects buy buying from the garden centre. Plus there's a non-stop harangue about not using peat and tut-tutting about non-organic chemicals.

If you are serious join the Hardy Plant Society and get their journal.
