I'm thinking of getting a wireless camera nest box for school to set up in our wildlife garden in the playground. We hope to watch the pictures (if a bird moves in ) on the computers in school.Does anyone have any experience of these kits? The prices range dramatically - and all seem to offer similar things. I would be grateful for any input. Thanks

    daintiness,

The first thing to be sure of about any box is what size the birds' entrance hole is. Some commercial boxes have holes that are far too big - have a look at the RSPB website for their recommendations, e.g. 25mm diameter for Blue, Coal and Marsh Tits. There's no point in having a camera if the birds don't want to use the box!

It's a great idea, though. There is a site where you can watch live feed from other schools' cameras. The children love it.

There is a large range of camera nest boxes available, and prices can vary considerably. If you have a school handyman or have DIY skills then you can make you own. Even if you buy the nest box and install a camera yourself then this can be a much cheaper alternative to buying one. The cameras can be picked up relatively cheaply.
