    Hi
Recently bought fairly large pot with Christmas money from grannie who has sadly now passed away. Very keen to get a shrub in it ideally that will flower in march - her birthday was 27th march - to remind me of her. My wish list would be something that:
    Flowers
    Won't need moving on
    Has winter interest
Is small to medium so I can plant spring bulbs and summer annuals around the edges.
The pot will be in a partly sunny sheltered site. Any suggestions?
    Many thanks

    Hi Lupinlucas,

For winter interest and likely to be still flowering at the end of March my suggestion would be Viburnum Bodnantese. The pink flowers are also scented.
As to keeping it manageable I found with mine that the more I pruned it the more flowering shoots it produced, although you can lose shape that way.

I also like Amelenchior: white flowers in spring, dark berries in late summer and lovely red foliage in autumn. It is quite bare for most of the winter, though, so you would need the winter interest to be in the planting underneath.

I have never successfully grown a myrtle, but that is another possibility, which I intend to try again myself, this year.

I'm sure you will get lots more suggestions for this lovely way to remember your grannie. Good luck,
    Summer

You can never say exactly when anything will flower, because it depends on the weather, but my suggestion would be a Kilmarnock willow, which has lovely catkins in March/April. The branches are bare in winter, but still interesting, and you could put Xmas lights on in the darkest days.
2nd suggestion camelia x williamsii "Freestyle". It`s evergreen, slow-growing, and it flowers in March/April.

An alternative, and an easy way of choosing a plant, is to visit one or two garden centres around your granny`s birthday, and see which plant is looking lovely that month.
