hello - I fancy planting out the pots round the front of my house with red white and blue this summer. I've got about half a dozen pots / tubs / buckets/ barrels various shapes and sizes but none smaller than 18 inches diameter. No hanging baskets, just floor standing. It would be good to have something from late May to September...

My pots are sheltered, west facing and they get no sun until mid morning, a gentle baking in mid afternoon and then nothing in the evening.
I'm a bit broke and have a greenhouse so am happy to raise from seed or get good value plugs. Any ideas? I just can't seem to make a decision!

I've got compost, ivy and bits of greenery I can transplant from elsewhere for artistic trailing... if anything in the display is perennial I will find a home for it.
    Cheers everyone -CM

    What about sweet peas?

All the growers have sent me offers on red white and blue collections this year. Suttons even have a flag kit.

May to September is summer-bedding season, so you will have plenty of flowers to choose from. The garden centres will be full of little plants.
For blue maybe lobelia, ageratum, cornflowers,
    For white, lobelia, busy lizzies
    For red, geraniums, poppies.

Maybe other posters can suggest more.

Hi there - thank you for the suggestions. i've gone for sweet peas which i'll put on a wigwam in one of my bigger pots and just simple lobelia for the others. I've got seed which will hopefully come on enough to make a decent display. I'm hoping that just having blocks of the same plant will work and be cheap too. smiley - smiley

I know what will happen though - I'll see something really nice at the garden centre and spend more on one plant than on a whole packet of seeds!
I had a look at the seed companies offers by the way. If anyone else is thinking along the same lines then the suttons site seemed the best - they had a flag template too to plant out in red white and blue - but a flag won't fit in my pots so that's no good!
    Cheers - CM
