    Dear Gardeners, I have moved to UK from Abu Dhabi and baught a house with a good size garden. My problem is I don't know anything about Gardening. I stumbled upon this website which gives lot of information. But do you know anyone in Manchester who can provide some basic lessons in Gardening, teach terms, etc like Gardening 101!
    Thanks a lot

    Hello Shrikant
    Welcome to the west and the challenging conditions for gardeners. Firtst of all you need to know about the seasons, that they are most unreliable!!! We can still get frost till the end of May, so the tender plants should not be planted out till then. Winters can be mild, but also extreme, as was the case last year. It's like Russian roulette!
    What are you interested in, flowers or fruit and veg? In Manchester, you will need a greenhouse or conservatory to grow things like tomatoes, chillis, cucumbers and capsicums, otherwise you might be waiting till October to harvest anything. Most other things will be happy outside with tlc.
    When planting seeds bought here, all the instructions are on the back of the packet re. depth, spacing and time to plant.
    Garden centres sell a very good series of books by Dr D G Hessayon called the EXPERTS and there is one for every aspect of gardening.
    Also, Gardeners World programme on BB2 on Fri nights will give you much info. especially now as we have just entered the new planting season.
    I wish you well in the west, and you are right, you will get a lot of good info. on this site.
    Good luck

    Sorry, I forgot to mention the soil. If yours is heavy and clay, you will need to dig in some compost, manure or peat to make it more crumbly. It is best to do this before you start anything else, so your plants will be happy and won't have to struggle. It makes weeding easier too. Your local garden centre should give you a lot of information. Good luck

    I live just over the hill from you in Huddersfield and I have produced a website based on my experience/s there.

    It is quite a large website so perhaps if I give you a few links within the site it will save you a lot of searching.

    The first page is entitled; Allotments; but the same principles can be applied to the type of garden you have inherited;

    This is basically about starting from a 'blank canvas' so read that along with its related links and you should get a fair idea of what to do.

    The next page I would suggest is the 'home' page,

    Here you will find an A to Z of garden plants and terms that links you to specific data, there is also various planners to show you when to do this and that!

    You will also find monthly task sheets by clicking on any of the six sections that appear in the 'monthly'drop down menu!

    I won't overburden your mind at this stage with any more details other than to say; drop in on these boards as an when you have a query and I am quite sure between us all we will get you up and running.

    Best of luck...Tg
