I've defended ivy over the years. I take it back! A variegated ivy had outstayed it's welcome. I spent yesterday taking it off. Thankfully it wasn't as stubborn as wild ivy and most of it came away easily.

I'm going to repair the mortar and want to cover it again. I want annual only, so nothing outstays it's welcome again. I'm unsure of what to go for though. I don't think things like sweet peas will work there. It's a sunny wall and space is shared with an apple tree and a couple of shrubs. So it needs to be vigorous and not religiously watered.

I like the look of canary creeper, but have never grown it before and aren't sure if it will climb of it's own accord, or just scramble across the ground. Because of the difficulty of access once the shrubs are in full growth, it ideally needs to do it's own stuff on a provided support.

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

Probably the best annual climber for your purposes would be Cobaea Scandens which is sown from seed about now. It will grow about 10 foot over summer with purple flowers. It is a twining climber so needs support and might need watering during the summer.

You might also like Maurandya [formerly Asarina] barclayana, which has small trumpet flowers and is not so rampant. Easy to grow from seed.

You could try a solanum - white or blue flowers, vigorous climber, loses some of its leaves in Winter and doesn't mind being cut back, so it shouldn't take over. Nan x

Thanks, I will look into those.

In the meantime, I'm on re-sprouting duty. I think I got it all, but ivy is ivy.
