Many of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's factual websites will be changing over the next twelve months. These changes will make our content easier to access and better in quality, but they will also mean we do less of some things - including messageboards.
The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Gardening messageboard will shortly be closing. The board's contents will not be deleted; all of your discussions, debates and information will remain on the site for your and others' reference. Closure will take place at 11am on Thursday 26 April 2012.
Thank you for being part of this online community and for your contributions to some great conversations.
You can find out more about the changes underway to the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú website at the following locations:

Thanks to Frank for the reminder.

The link to 'Gardeners Corner' in the page refered to in the post just above doesn't work. That's a big pity because Gardeners Corner is a very interesting forum.
Gardeners Corner has some 40,000 discussions, and 5,000 members.
What's especially interesting about Gardeners Corner, is that, a few weeks ago, a new member joined, called 'Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Gardeners World'.
They were actually looking for gardeners to take part in the present series of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's Gardeners World.
Check this out:
The forum main page is here:

Will be sad to see this forum go . I have found you all to be such nice people.
If the need is for similar camaraderie then I could suggest the following sites from personal experience, in fact I know there are a number of people on this forum(Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú) who are subscribers.
This is quite a nice forum,very friendly people have met quite a few of them in person at organised get-togethers they have ;
This is another one I was once part of, might give them another visit;
Then there is this one which I visit every day and often take part in their discussions;
All I can say is lets make the best of the next couple of weeks.
Perhaps Geoff can open a thread re- forums where we could list sites some of us have visited over the years and who knows we might all meet up again.
I have started with a few perhaps it is better we get them all on to one list before the shut down then we can take a copy of the final list and hopefully we will meet up again, and who knows we might be able to do this " live"
I leave my thoughts with you......Tg

Thanks Tee Gee, very helpful as usual. A good idea to have one list of possible meeting points. I'm sure good old Geoff will come up trumps!

Ah well. I guess it was the inevitable conclusion to be drawn from recent developments.
It's been impressive how well this board has run since December completely without host intervention - was rather hoping 'host-lite' version this would continue.
Anyway, so long and thanks for all the tips.

There is a managing editor ,gardening??-who knew !!!
Since the beginning of the year there has been no sign of a host or any body from the bbc.
These boards must cost pennies to run-the decision stinks, there is no point in complaining as no -one listens.
We have tried hard I feel to build up a nice friendly community here ,with few bad words and taken some self control.
There are other boards out there and I am also going to look about setting a new one up-will post detailsin due course if any one would be interested in contributing.

As many of you already know, this forum:
was set up when the "over the garden fence" threads were all closed down on here and there was nowhere for message board friends to chat. It has now been going for 4 years, is a very friendly forum, and will welcome new friends who are refugees from here. Please use your Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú nickname if you would like to join us, so we know who you are.

...I am also going to look about setting a new one up-will post details in due course if any one would be interested in contributing.Â
That though had crossed my mind.
But I hesitated because several althernatives already exist.
One of the problems with the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's board is that plenty of alternatives do exist, and many would say that the Beeb shouldn't be in that business.
Does TG run a wbsite, the Gardeners Almanac. I wondered whether he might decide to put a forum on there. It's not a big job.
Link to this forum: Changes to the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Gardening messageboard
On that point Gary I am not sure
TAPS already exists and is full of ex board members-would people rather go there- that is they want to make contributions to messageboards or if an alternative was set up would I just be talking to myself and the dog.
I COULD open a topic to gauge reaction -it is tricky unless someone jumps in because we can't all get a room together to discuss it .
It doesn't matter how many there are I suppose- but there are many, many, people on this board whose opinion and contributions I respect-personally it would be a shame to lose that.

TAPS is really just for people who like to chat. Let's be honest, gossip.
Just take a look at the thread titles on there. There are virtually no threads on there which are actually about gardening topics. It's just like the monthly chat thread on here.
I do think there's a requirement for a more open forum for people to discuss real gardening topics. The Gardeners Corner appealed to me.
There's nothing at all to be lost by setting up a forum, and seeing whether you can migrate the serious gardeners from here, and see what happens.
We need to get some more feedback, here and now, from key regular posters on the Garden Clinic, Grow Your Own, and TV boards, people like AlinaW, Berghill, and similar.

So what do you suggest-I set up a topic on each board?-am happy to do so GaryÂ
There already is a topic on every board, 'Changes to the Message Board', exactly like this one. But most of them don't have many too replies at the moment. I haven't checked them all.
That topic, on each board, is the place to tell everyone what you intend to do, and to ask everyone if they're interested in coming on board.
Link to this forum: Changes to the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Gardening messageboard
About feedback - new and old gardeners come to the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú website because the BEEB is an institution that is known and trusted by practically every one.
Before anyone signs on here they know their details are safe, that the forums are moderated, that there`ll be no "f" words, and it will be relatively polite and friendly.
People wouldn`t know that in advance of joining other gardening forums, and so I wonder if new members would join so confidently.
Link to this forum: Changes to the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Gardening messageboard

Thanks for having the faith in me to to do this Gary but I am not sure if I want to simply because of the 'time aspect'
Then there are the cost implications which I guess is one reason for the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú forum closing.
My hobby is 'gardening' not computers, and currently I am quite happy to visit forums for an hour or so a day,
I certainly don't want it to be at it 'all day' - 'every day' but I am prepared to consider it.
What I have done since your posting is; I have emailed my website host for details on what is involved in setting up a 'forum'
Once I have their reply. and I have read it. I will give the matter some consideration and take it from there.....Tg

We expected it now it is concluded and nothing new in the annals of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú.
I first came on the boards for WW2 Peoples war which ran for six years then was arbitarily closed down just when they were getting more stories than ever.
The History board closed down before Christmas, they wrecked the cookery board last year and now this.
I stayed with the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú board as I thought it safe but now doubt that when they gave another group all the h2g2 information which means they can use it as and when they like.
Looking at alternatives they all need a lot of personal information and I ask is it safe, Face book Twitter and other forums have been hacked into before today.
I am thinking it is time to give up this time and sit back with a book after a day gardening, "oh" and no more weather either.
The losers will be the beginners looking for experienced information on their problems, we had our gardening fathers to guide us most of the new ones do not.
It is a sad day.
Frank.

It is a sad day, Frank.
I will look at other boards, but I just dip in here when looking at the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú News, then the weather, then here, so it's all part of a one-stop shop over a cup of tea, really, rather than a pro-active engagement with a gardening board.
I know many of you are rather sniffy about Twitter, but there's a huge group of keen gardeners there and that's where I tend to be most active nowadays. I post as @suebeesley so if you want to find me there, you will.

I agree; This is my prime reason for coming onto forums such as these and building my website.
40+ years ago what I would have done for the technology of today.
In those day you tried something this year, if it didn't work you tried something else the next year until you got it right, { I still don't have it right }
Whereas now you just add your query to a forum and some kind old soul will come along and answer it for you thus saving years of trial and error.
Could this be " Virtual Instant Gardening" ?
I wish I had had such a facility all those years ago
Link to this forum: Changes to the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Gardening messageboard
We had kind gardeners though TeeGee, just as we have today. I think gardeners are a kind race.
Years ago I remember standing in front of a load of seed potatoes in a garden centre, and not knowing one potato from another.
An old chap, who I`d never seen before, and didn`t know from Adam, explained their uses to me, and told me which he`d tried over the years, and which potatoes were his "good doers".
He handed that information to me on a plate, when it must have taken him years to accumulate that knowledge.
I thought, at the time, can you image, say, a solicitor or some other professional, handing information like that out completely free? It wouldn`t happen, you`d have to pay.

Tee Gee, my father was a very keen gardener who provided most of our needs from a large garden and smallholding of animals, as well as working in transport and fire watching in wartime. He was very patient with a young lad who wanted to cut corners and speed things up. He let me make my mistakes then gently showed the way to do things, with generations of farmers and gardeners in the family he knew what worked and what did not.
In the last 40-50 years gardening turned into a fashion rather than a need so the people who suddenly find they have to help the family budget with some fresh produce do not have that passed on experience, that is why I would answer the same questions week after week, they are genuine and do not know.
This was a simple forum to find and ask those questions now it is gone, the group of dedicated gardeners who answered those questions will be mainly lost if they like me are shy of some of the other forums.
Someone on here said all they need do is google, that is OK if you know what you are looking at, a rooky gardener would have trouble sorting the wheat from the chaff.
Frank.

Trillium, that is my routine too but unlike you I am retired so could spend time on some of the queries, that is between washing cleaning and cooking.
All my family are away at the lakes this week and wanted to take me, I stayed home for the rest.
I will look you up though was hoping to see one of your gardens again this year, are you doing any of the show gardens?

Hello Frank,
I've decided it's time to dip my toe in the refined waters of the Floral Marquee at Tatton, so you'll find me there. Would be a great pleasure to meet you after all this virtual time. I'll be in the marquee at Southport too.
Of course, you can come and find me at the gardens too - pretty much anytime

I do view this board daily and enjoy answering when I feel that I can help.

Alina-
I have decided not to bother after all to be honest-there seem to be plenty of gardening sites out there.
I have moved to TAPS for chatting and at some point will land on one of the gardening forums available-hope to see some familiar names there.
We still need to organise the end of term party

I'm very disappointed as it always takes me a while to get used to a forum and to the contributors. Whilst I belong to a number of classic car, kitcar, geneology and local history forums, I belong to only one other gardening forum, Peter Beales Roses. It's a shame because in the main, and with the exception of the TV & Radio section, I've really enjoyed reading of the experiences of others and offering advice on subjects that have worked for me.

Hello Trillium! Good luck with your stall at Tatton. Can't make it this year unfortunately . Any chance of you venturing over the Pennines to one of the Harrogate shows in the future?
----
Although I don't post much here any more, I've met some lovely people through these boards - both virtually and in reality . Some are now friends on TAPS, but I fear others will be scattered to the various corners of the gardening forums world
So can I take this chance to say thank you everyone for all the advice I've picked up from here over the years. And the laughs

Here here Joany. Remember the fun we used to have.
Pantos, banquets etc etc.
We have had happy times and sad times but most of all friendship.
We've laughed, we've cried, particularly when Frank's wee doggie died.
We've gardened and grown.
Weeded and planted.
Some of us have actual met.
26th April will be a sad day for all of us.

Me too.
I think it's worth having a look, and possibly singing up, to a few of these boards, just to see what they're like, over a period of a few days.
It's like starting at a new school(s).
What has suprised me is how many, quite interesting boards, there seem to be out there.
I've signed up to a few.
There do seem to be several big differences between all of those boards and the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú.
1) The formats of those boards are all similar. The posts are wider, and quite compact.
2) The posts on those boards are loaded with graphic images. As you know, we can't post images on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú. I think this is an anachronism dating from the time when most people used a dial-up modem, and downloading pages with any graphics on them took ages. So the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú decided they wouldn't allow members to use images.
3) Those boards all appear to be open 24/7. As you know, the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú don't start work till 9am, and 10am at weekends.
Given a choice, I am actually quite surprised that anyone would ever have wanted to join any of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú boards.

Hello Amazing, I still miss Benji though with my wife's illness I did not get another dog. It is a year since I lost Joan and thinking of a small rescue dog, we will see.
I still have copies of some of those panto's etc, was reading some the other day and laughing my head off, I thought the last one with the plastic garden and search light sun was the best. The Boag Knights on the SCD board took some beating though.
I was amazed at how every one let their imagination run and boy they came up with some great stuff.
Sitting back a while now and will look at some of the sites though I feel less like getting involved now.
Frank.

".. but hey, if I hadn't joined Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú, I would never have met all you terrific folk!Â
One factor that the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú did have going for it was our expertise. Novice gardeners could get answers to their questions.
Of course, I don't know how wonderful all of these other boards are. We'll see. One can be blinded by the fancy graphics and professional presentation.
Anyway, we'll all be going off into the wide world.
I guess this is some kind of Diaspora.

It does seem slightly insane that people will still be able to discuss the real life act of gardening and growing their own stuff in a virtual room above a virtual pub, in an imaginary town in a fictitious county from a Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú radio soap opera, but not talk about it in the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's Gardening resource area...
Link to this forum: Changes to the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Gardening messageboard
Quite honestly I can't see it being unusual, let alone 'insane' and certainly no more 'virtual' than these boards.
The Village Hall message board is (like this place) a gathering of people with shared interests, many more than just gardening. These include such subjects as Alzheimer’s, coping with cancer, keeping cats, dogs, chickens & bird watching..just to mention a few.
I introduced a segment called 'The Potting Shed' to The Village Hall about 5 years ago and have organised it ever since.
It’s a friendly & spat free place with a helpful and knowledgeable people, as well as people fairly new to gardening
It's open 24/7 and anyone wishing to give it a try it would be very welcome.
Link to this forum: Changes to the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Gardening messageboard
David whilst accepting what you say it is not a natural place to visit to discuss gardening problems is it? -to an outsider it is a messageboard about a radio programme, and there are 9 of them!!
Why would a gardener seeking advice think "I will go on the Archers message board"
As I understand it it is funded out of the radio 4 budget-with budget cuts all message boards will go-they are not part of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú longterm plan
Enjoy it while you can-I genuinely wish you well- and I might pop in.

Thedogcody - To an extent I agree, but inasmuch as this 'natural place' is getting the boot, it does offer a friendly alternative and does have feel & format of a Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú to which we are all used to.
'Enjoy it while you can-I genuinely wish you well- and I might pop in'
Please do, but have to say that emoticons are not available.
For the record, most of TA message boarders feel they are on borrowed time too, but there is an attractive alternative for them.
