    Hello all

I have a brick shed on one side of my small patio which faces north east. Can anyone suggest something flowery that will grow in pots against the wall? The only things I've managed to keep alive are ferns and hostas. Fuschias do ok, but die off in the winter, and I don't have space to store them.

Obviously Camellias, Azaleas, Rhodos are out as it's east facing. The north aspect means that it spends most of the day in the shade.

I'd like to cover the wall except for the window so does anyone know of any climbing plants or large plants that would grow in pots with this aspect?

    Hi linda,

I'm going to stick my neck out here and suggest that a camellia might actually do fairly well here. The problem with East facing and camellias is if it is quite exposed and subject to quick changes in temperature from freezing cold to warmth in strong morning sunlight the flowers can be damaged Your position sounds fairly sheltered and may not suffer that much from this?

In which case I'd go for one as they are the most lovely thing to have in shade with large flowers and glossy leaves. I'd go for a williamsii and then one of the darker red colours as they tend to be a bit more tolerant of morning sun in my experience. I'd even risk the occasional year of damaged flowers for the years when they are good!

akebia quinata is semi evergreen and will grow in a pot.

I've heard of people growing garryia elliptica in large pots too, though whether
they would then be completely frost hardy is something I can't answer.

I have a choisya ternata - the plain green one - growing in such a position.
According to the books, it shouldn`t grow there as it is supposed to need a sunnier spot, so I expected it to produce no flowers.
It has though, the flower buds are on now!
I don`t know how well it would do though if your soil is limey.
    Mine is sandy, quite neutral.

Sorry - ignore my bit about the soil, just read your post again and see the plant is to live in a pot. So obviously you can choose any suitable soil.

I too have a east facing brick wall in need of shady/shade loving plants.

I found this site very helpful with its extensive list of full/part shade loving plants/flowers. Hope you do too !!

    Enjoy smiley - smiley

    Thanks for this list Margaret!

I have 2 very healthy Camellias, but hadn't thought to try one for this aspect. You're right that it would be sheltered, due to the wall.

After I wrote the message I was watching Beechgrove on iPlayer and they suggested a Garrya for a north-facing wall. If it's good enough for Scotland I think it will work in Derbyshire.

Hadn't though about Akebia quinata but just had a look and it does look like it would work.

Right well that's my spending money sorted for the next couple of months!
