I thought it would be appropriate to start this thread before the curtains come down on Thursday.

For myself I would just like to say best wishes to everyone past & present and thank you for your company over the years.
I sincerely hope whatever paths you take in the future, you find happiness & contentment.

    Good gardening!

Thank you David, we are gardeners quite used to hard knocks and things not going as planned, we use a few words not in the dictionary and change tack.
We will see them popping up again just as chirpy on other forums, probably more than one.
So my friends when I sort things out this end I hope to meet your all again elsewhere.
    Frank.

    Good idea David.

I've only been on these boards for a couple of years - finally plucking up the courage to post something after reading numerous other posts. I've learnt so much, have been so impressed with the wealth of knowledge and the willingness to help which exists, and have laughed out loud more than once.

Although it is a sad decision, and most people are naturally resistant to change, the good thing is I think it's made a lot of us realise how technically deficient this site is, and that we can continue sharing experience and inspiration on other sites which have much more to offer.

I was already signed up on the GW site, but hardly ever bothered to use the forum as this one seemed to have more users, but now I can see a lot of us are now active on there. I've also signed up for Gardeners Corner, which also seems a friendly and easy-to-use site.

I do hope the more senior members aren't put off from joining other forums. We need you!!!!
Although just the 'newness' and difference of it all can be off-putting at the beginning, most of them really are easy to use.

All the very best to everyone, thanks once again, and hopefully the contact will continue.
    xxx

Sunday, 30th October 2005 was my earliest posting on the newly changed site. Before that I had 200 posting and over 2000 under a different name before they wiped them all out. I joined when there were less than 3,000 postings altogether. Sad to see all that disappear,
Remember the short lived Children's section and the infamous Solicitors letter incident?
My first ever posting was about a very early morning encounter with a hare. Lishka replied and we still occasionally hear from her. Happy days.
Best of gardening to you all and see you elsewhere!

I also joined in 2005 as an innocent poster with a simple question about Worcesterberries. befor elong as I was part of a thriving community and had become Obelixx. I too remember the solicitor's letter, nested postings going off at wonderful tangents from the original post, meets arranged at RHS flower shows and gardens, parties, virtual coach trips, sagas and rants, quizzes, competitions, trials, photo galleries, fending off WAV, the bad boys - Derek and Mycowaz - lots of humour, lots of fun, lots of very good advice and some pretty heated "discussions" on the merits of various bits of GW and the various presenters.

I've made lots of real and virtual friends on here and had a great time and benefitted enormously from knowledge and advice dispensed generously by so many fine gardeners.

Thank you all and I expect and hope I'll see most of you on the other side on the new Gardeners World forums.

I lurked for a while and was eventually drawn in by the Wav thread! Who wouldn't be?
i'll miss you all, even most of the arguments were good!
    - some people I keep in touch with via e-mail, some via TAPS
I remember the bad boys with affection, nothing like a bad boy rant to make me laugh!
Or have steam coming out of my ears......
I have met some lovely people here - more lovely than those who weren't, so not bad statistically?
As I said, i'm over at TAPS - a home from home.
Is this the appropriate time to say farewell to Gridgardener?

I lurked for ages too, and Hypercharleyfarley (the name of one of my whippets) finally joined in the Worm Poo thread, and acquired a virtual auntie - Nooj - whose name was slightly different then, wasn't it, Nooj?

I have learned such a lot from reading all sorts of posts and have been entertained/cheered up/enlightened almost every day since I first discovered the Boards' existence - so Many Thanks, to you all!

HCF is in reality no more - having "gone to chase the bunnies in the sky" early in January - but the nickname remains. I hope that the demise of these message boards won't mean that people don't keep in touch - I guess by now you must all know of the alternatives - so, I look forward to "seeing" you elsewhere.

    Ma.

p.s If there's to be a "leaving party" at the weekend, I'll not be able to attend, due to family commitments - hence this message now. A sad reason for a party, but - enjoy it anyway!

You made it possible for me to get attached to a dog I'd never even met - despite shamless bribes of cottage pie on my part - he never knocked on my door
I think a lot of us felt as though we knew him well, and had a virtual cuddle.

My first post was on the old boards too - some time in 2005.

I asked a question about propagating Prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis' and Sorbus 'Joseph Rock', because we were thinking of moving house.

I think the answers were from William and Goldilocks - great advice which I took, and ended up with a little bit of both plants here.

It was good while it lasted - thanks to everyone for their advice, encouragement and entertainment over the last 7 years...

Farewell beeb freds and friends, I heard via TAPS it was all about to end.

Haven't been on here for a while, but it was the advice and enthusiasm on this board from 2006/7 onwards that helped secure gardening's hooks into my very being and has made it such a massive part of me and my life now. Many names spring to mind, some who aren't even with us any more, but there have certainly been a lot of personalities that have made these boards the great community resource it is.

I know I will "see" many of you on TAPS (where gardening is actually just a common theme for a good get together and also have some helpful garden topics too) but to the rest of you and I sincerely wish all of you the very best of health and happiness, except of course to Grid, who I hope the Karma poilce catch up with in double quick time and dispatch some suitable retribution to.

In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions to stop my 3 darling moggies defecating in my freshly dug beds....... smiley - winkeye

    Cheers

TAPS was never intended to be a rival to the Beeb - just a way of allowing like-minded people to chat away from some of the Draconian Beeb rules, some trolls and some arguments that seemed to go on and on and on..
It developed into a gardening board with seed and plant swaps, meet-ups . and real friendship and humour.
I'm not touting for new members - just saying how lovely i find it.

I made my first post on the BEEB Garden Clinic board in a thread about Pond Blanket Weed on Thursday, 3rd November 2005....

A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then - I stopped posting on the gardening boards once the 3 minute rule was introduced.

With the help of a few really good friends I set up a gardening and wildlife forum over 3 years ago which keeps me busy. Sorry to say I really don't have enough spare time to join and post on the GW site.

As some of you may remember I lurked for a couple of years before being 'forced' to join properly at the beginning of 2008 so that I could go to the Harlow Carr outing and meet all the messageboarders I had come to ‘know’ so well.

I happened upon the Boards, not for a gardening question as such but while I was searching to see what had happened to Chris Beardshaw when he disappeared from GW never to be mentioned again, or explained smiley - biggrin).

That was back in 2005(?), certainly when it was the old format. I didn’t find out what had happened to CB from here (except that when I did ‘find’ him I would have to share him with a multitude of other admirers smiley - winkeye ), but what I did find was a group of knowledgeable people who could also be fun, and I began to read as many threads as I could, printing them out to entertain me on the bus home from work. As I had no computer at home there didn’t seem much point in signing up and I could learn what I needed from other people’s queries.

Of course when I did join they almost immediately stopped the fun threads smiley - steam

Through joining these boards I’ve met, both virtually and in the flesh, some lovely people, including three Gardeners of the Year (and also visited two of their gardens smiley - smiley).

I, along with many others from here, have joined the Gardeners’ World site which looks a pretty decent replacement for here, but I have been a member of TAPS since it started and can also recommend it as a lovely friendly place to be (for gardening, food, the ups & downs of life in general ........). Room for both in my life now I'm retired smiley - biggrin

Sorry, rambled on a bit there smiley - biggrin, so I guess that now is the time to say goodbye .............

I can think of no better way to finish, than with a poem, by Jose Marti

A white rose do I tend
    In July as in January;
I give it to the true friend
Who offers his frank hand to me.

And for the cruel one whose blows
Tear out the heart by which I live,
Thistle nor thorn do I give:
For him, too, I grow a white rose.

    ***here's the Spanish original:

    Cultivo una rosa blanca
    En julio como en enero,
    Para el amigo sincero
Que me da su mano franca.

Y para el cruel que me arranca
    El corazón con que vivo,
    Cardo ni ortiga cultivo;
    Cultivo una rosa blanca.

    Goodnight sweet princes...

Well I was highly honoured by this sonnet written about me.

    A sonnet to David K

I fill my pots with compost
And arrange them all in rows
Then push the seeds in firmly
And wait to see them grow

The days fly by so swiftly
    I watch with baited breath
    Will my shots grow healthy?
    Or condemned to early death

    The days are getting longer
    The soil outside is warm
    I carry my seedlings carefully
Like a mother with a new born.

I dig a trench so deeply
And fill with muck and peat
Then into little holes I plant them
    Covering up their tiny feet.

    The spring turns into summer
    My plants begin to grow
    They scrabble up the wigwam
    Just watch those B’s grow

I tie their arms in firmly
And my heart begins to thud
    I remember the happy feeling
When I see my very first bud

    I watch with trepidation
As over the frame they tower
    I am so excited
To see my very first flower

    I know I’m just a novice
To say different I wouldn’t dare
My sweet peas are truly amazing
But to yours there’s no compare

These message boards will be missed and it's such a shame that the Beeb are making the decision to cut them. Maybe they have decided to invest in better tv programs! However, I do think these message boards provided the beeb with useful contributions as to what are the current trends etc. It also gave value for tv licensing money. At the end of the day people need to be with likeminded people and these message boards offered this.

    A sad day indeed.

Take care and may you always have enough rain to water your plants and enough sun to bring light and warmth to your gardens.
