Weymouth Carnival 2008

Organisers, Weymouth's Round Table, had decided to no longer run the event, which, after more than 50 years, nearly meant the end of the town's traditional annual festival.

But local businesses and individuals got together and formed the Carnival Committee. The results of their hard work were clear as everyone taking part gathered in the Pavilion's hall - taking shelter from the persistent rain - in readiness for the 6pm start.

With planning only beginning last February, it was decided the carnival parade wouldn't use any floats, and instead be entirely on foot.

One of the organisers, Sue Follan, explained: "We only took over in February this year, we had no resources and there were lots of health and safety issues so as committee we took the decision for no floats - and it's been a good turn out, despite the bad weather."
