A new chapter for Dorset couple

Despite the credit crunch one couple in Dorset have started their own publishing company, producing unusual, distinctive and practical books with the emphasis very much on Dorset.

Tim and Julie Musk decided to set up the publishing company two years ago, but with Tim's job with the RAF taking them to America (the subject of their first book A Slice of Apple Pie) the project did not get up and running until early 2008, after the couple returned to their home in Frampton near Dorchester.

After studying agriculture and business at Shuttleworth Agricultural College in Bedfordshire, Julie worked in publishing for 18 years.

Throughout her career, she has edited, proofread and project-managed hundreds of books and journals.

So why start the company now, when times are tough for many small businesses?

Tim, who spent 23 years in the Royal Air Force, sums it up. He says: "We and particularly Julie have always wanted to go in this direction, but the reason behind it is the lifestyle it brings with it - what better way to earn a living (hopefully) than roaming and exploring around Dorset, and beyond, looking for interesting stories.听

"This really is a beautiful county."

Although they are up against the big publishing houses in London they have already got their first book on the shelves of Waterstones and Borders.

With their first books as publisher rather than authors - Roaring Dorset! Encounters with Big Cats - due out soon, and a series of "lesser known guides" of Dorset hitting the shelves in 2009, things are moving in the right direction for this family publishing business.

As Julie explains: "Being in the countryside is a bonus for us both. In fact, we need to keep our roots here, it's where our business focus lies."
