We speak to Vin Harrop, Director of the 'Our Basildon' project, about what you can expect on the explorers’ route. "We are here to prove that Basildon does indeed have a heritage. For the young people, Basildon is 60 years, and that’s a long time, and that is their heritage," explains Vin Harrop. There's green everywhere! Vin is determined to have Basildon high on the heritage map, but, with a little bit of help from the town’s folks. The inauguration of the permanent 12-km Heritage Trail is the culmination of four years of effort by the 'Our Basildon' project, an independent community organisation. The town will benefit from £100,000 worth of signposts, maps, and information panels to help people understand, and perhaps, appreciate this place better. The route promises a look at the unique public art and architecture and wide green open spaces around the town. The RSPB will join in the trail with information on wildlife found around the area. Landmarks that stand outStanding tall - Basildon's Bell Tower St Nicholas ChurchSituated beautifully on a hill, this is known for its spectacular ancient architecture and timber roof built over 500-years-ago. The churchyard is known for its peace and tranquility and also offers extensive views of the town and the countryside. The Basildon Bell TowerOne of its kind and housing unique pieces of bells. The earliest bell here is understood to date back to 1441, donated by a lady in Whitechapel, London. The acoustic in the bell tower is said to be astounding. St Martin’s churchDo not miss the sculpture outside the church, a controversial piece of art and a new concept of what Christ looks like. Spiritual colours inside St Martin's church "The insides of the church come alive with the colours of the stained glass windows designed by artist Joseph Nuttgens," says Vin. "There are 10 windows and all the glass used has been made by hand! These windows have been acclaimed and are known to be some of the finest examples of modern art." The Lady Chapel inside the church also has a magnificent stained glass window designed by Joseph Nuttgens. What do people of Basildon have to say, about this new found treasure up their alley? Basildon's hub of heritage activities "We have got a tremendous response from people here," says Vin. "There are many who have lived here for decades and who want to speak about their experiences of living in this beautiful town. We will be giving them an opportunity to do that too." The 'Our Basildon' project has been made possible by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Essex County Council and the Basildon District Council. More details are available via the website below.
