Krist贸f Bar谩ti opens this afternoon with Bart贸k鈥檚 Second Violin Concerto 鈥� a work that truly shows the composer鈥檚 consummate understanding of writing for strings. Despite being written between 1907 and 1908, Bart贸k鈥檚 other first violin concerto - his first - was only published after his death in 1956 so the piece we hear today is the only violin concerto that Bart贸k himself officially recognized.

We also hear Brahms鈥檚 Second Symphony 鈥� full of warmth and bubbling with optimism. Whilst it took Brahms fourteen years to complete his First Symphony, his Second 鈥� with its cheerful and flowing melodies 鈥� was penned in a single summer holiday.
