Concert information
On a snow-covered road, a flute plays a Russian folksong. Tchaikovsky鈥檚 six symphonies add up to a truly epic emotional journey, but that鈥檚 how it all begins, and there鈥檚 an innocence, an energy and a sense of youthful fantasy to his First Symphony that鈥檚 wholly captivating. Dvo艡谩k鈥檚 'Slavonic Dances' (Op.46, No.1 in C major; Op.46, No.2 in E minor and Op.46, No.7 in C minor) share the same freshness, and in the hands of conductor Martyn Brabbins they should make a delightful complement to a major Scottish Premiere: Sir James MacMillan鈥檚 powerful new 'Trombone Concerto', performed here by J枚rgen van Rijen, the Dutch virtuoso who gave its World Premiere in Amsterdam in 2017. 鈥淰intage MacMillan鈥 said one critic. 鈥淭he trombone sang, sang, sang鈥 reported another: come and judge for yourself.
Prelude: 6.45pm in the Recital Room
Sir James MacMillan and J枚rgen van Rijen discuss the Concerto, writing for the trombone, and their musical collaboration (free to ticket-holders, subject to seating availability).
