Programme

Concert Information

We step into Cinderella’s enchanted world. Fairy tales are, by default, bittersweet. Our princess-in-waiting meets the steely glint of Prokofiev’s music in one of the most dazzling ballet scores ever written. Stories don’t always go in one direction as we’ll find out in, Concentric Paths, a violin concerto by Thomas Adès, a musical ellipsis – it orbits, restless and haunting. Tonight’s soloist is Christian Tetzlaff, one of the world’s most exciting violinists, and the synergy between composer and violinist promises to be spellbinding. Meanwhile,

Dmitri Shostakovich wrote some of the 20th century’s most passionate and colourful music and our Chief Conductor John Storgårds opens the book on Shostakovich’s world of pain and parody. Even the youthful First Symphony is a tragicomedy – no spoilers but expect a rollercoaster ride.
