Intimate, haunting and expressing the essence of traditional English folk song, Angeline Morrison鈥檚 2022 album The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience tells the untold stories of people from the African diaspora and their place in these islands. Here are musical tales of the 鈥楿nknown African Boy (d.1830)鈥�, an enslaved child whose body was washed up on the Isles of Scilly; or 鈥楤lack John鈥�, the first known Black horticulturist in Britain; or 鈥楾he Beautiful Spotted Black Boy鈥�, an enslaved child born with vitiligo, whose patchy complexion caused him to be paraded as a curiosity. In researching and telling these stories, Morrison both preserves and reinvigorates the rich tapestry of English folk music. She performs here with The Sorrow Songs Band and special guests Eliza Carthy and Alex Neilson.
