Stephen Hough is the soloist for Brahms鈥檚 turbulent, rule-breaking First Piano Concerto. Its emotional intensity is tempered by the graceful elegance of Haydn鈥檚 Symphony No. 99 and the dancing energy of David Sawer鈥檚 The Greatest Happiness Principle.

About This Event

Though booed at its premiere in 1859, Brahms's First Piano Concerto has gone on to become one of the most-beloved of piano concertos. A giant of a piece with an emotional scope to match, it is at its most tender in the slow movement 鈥 a 鈥榞entle portrait鈥 of Clara Schumann.

Tempering this intensity is Haydn鈥檚 graceful Symphony No. 99 and David Sawer鈥檚 The Greatest Happiness Principle, with its dancing, rhythmically charged textures. Inspired by Jeremy Bentham鈥檚 Utopian philosophies, it is performed tonight as part of the PRS for Music Foundation鈥檚 Resonate scheme, promoting British music of the past 25 years, in partnership with the Association of British Orchestras and 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio 3.
