This afternoon's concert opens with Bantock's stirring composition; The Sea Reivers. A concise and vigorous sea-poem of vivid orchestral colours. We approach almost a hundred years since this tempestuous piece, based on ‘A Hebridean Sea-Reiver’s Song’ was first performed.

The nautical theme continues further with Piano Concerto No 2 'Cauldron of the Speckled Seas’ from internationally renowned composer Sally Beamish. Inspired by the whirlpool at Corryvreckan, off the west coast of Scotland - this piece develops steadily before culminating in a restless voyage, a relentless whirlpool and finally, a descending calm.

Closing this afternoon's concert - Sibelius’s ambitious and extraordinary Seventh Symphony, which Sibelius compared to rivulets forming a fast flowing river on its way to the sea.
