Principal Guest Conductor John Storg氓rds opens today鈥檚 programme with Grieg鈥檚 gentle Lyric Suite. An orchestration of four of his most popular Lyric Pieces, Grieg鈥檚 Suite is ripe with delicate textures -and this utterly delightful musical miniature certainly reinforces his gift for sound-painting.

The grit and astringency of Vaughan Williams鈥檚 Sixth Symphony follows. Noteworthy for its unusually discordant harmonic language, no-one expected the sheer, explosive force of his astonishing Sixth and, 70 years on, this firestorm of a symphony still leaves listeners reeling. John Storg氓rds unleashes its power this afternoon.
