Imagine...an irrational robot goes terrifyingly off the rails鈥 & Percussionist Colin Currie is the only man who can stop it.
Prokofiev wrote his Sixth Symphony in the aftermath of World War Two, and though it鈥檚 certainly an epic, it鈥檚 far from clear that it ends in anything as simple as triumph. His 鈥楢utumnal Sketch鈥 which opens this concert is rooted in late Romanticism (composed when he was an 18-year-old composition student of the great Rimsky-Korsakov!), but there are sure signs of the distinctive voice that Prokofiev would later develop.
It鈥檚 the climax of a whole evening of music that asks as many questions as it answers, including Olga Neuwirth鈥檚 utterly original vision of a robot creator going terrifyingly off the rails. Armed with DJ turntables, a megaphone and clicking metal frogs, soloist Colin Currie - possibly the world鈥檚 greatest living percussionist 鈥 is the only man who can stop it鈥
This concert ends at approximately 9:30pm.

*** Due to unforeseen circumstances, Ilan Volkov (originally scheduled to conduct) is unable to join us for this concert. We are grateful to conductor Mihhail Gerts, who steps in to lead an exhilarating programme (as originally billed) alongside Colin Currie.
