Mahler鈥檚 鈥楻眉ckert鈥 songs and troubled tenth symphony are moving meditations on themes of beauty, death and martyrdom. With its reflective opening movements, Beethoven鈥檚 fourth concerto sets the mood perfectly.

Programme

Stephen Hough plays Beethoven

Mahler鈥檚 set of orchestral songs was the first of its kind. The listener is taken from the everyday pleasure of a smelling a flower to the midnight of the soul. The unfinished tenth symphony was a deeply cathartic work for the composer, helping him to come to terms with his broken marriage and impending death. Meanwhile, right from the solo opening chords, Beethoven gently finds new ground within the piano concerto genre.
