Stuart (Fox) is a talking mouse who gets adopted by the Littles and slowly becomes part of the family despite opposition and danger from the Little's cat.
The film looks great with as much attention paid to the settings and the costumes as to the special effects mouse. The effect is a slightly dreamy, not quite cartoon appearance which does make the story somehow more believable.
But it doesn't make it a story. This is really a series of set pieces with the logic of seeing what scrapes the makers can get Stuart into next. If you find Stuart adorable, and very many will, you'll enjoy the increasingly clever adventures but you're unlikely to be too concerned for his safety.
For the storytelling is surprisingly crude next to the sophisticated animation. It's like a checklist where Stuart isn't welcomed by the little boy, check, and now he is, check. Cue the danger, cue the solution, exit any involvement.
Davis and Laurie are very good with what are really technical roles: acting to empty air that is later filled in by the animators and, in Laurie's case, also adopting an American accent. They manage to take the edge off what could have been an unbearably sweet fairy tale and instead they make the movie far less sugary than you imagine.
It could also have been better. While it will please many, it's not got the wit of a film like "Matilda" that makes it a hit for adults and children alike.
