Action films like this are hardly brain surgery. But, based on a 1974 original, this version of "Gone In 60 Seconds" is in desperate need of a service.
Nicolas Cage is Randall 'Memphis' Raines, an ex car thief brought out of retirement when dodgy Christopher Eccleston lures Memphis' brother Kip (Ribisi) into a car boosting scam.
To save his bro, Raines has a task: to steal 50 cars in one night and deliver them to Eccleston to ship overseas. Not as easy as it sounds, even for an old pro like Memphis, so he sets about regrouping his old crew, including Otto (Duvall) and Sway (Jolie). The clock is ticking - can they do it?
Well, what do you think? It's an engaging premise, but somewhere along the line it all goes wrong. Every character bar Cage is barely introduced and what should be a constant adrenaline rush is reduced to a few measly car chases.
The dialogue is so cheesy it needs crackers, which means you are waiting in vain for some high-speed action that barely ever comes. Rather, the film-makers seem intent on just looking at the undoubtedly expensive hardware and saying "isn't it pretty?", which has limited appeal to those of us who aren't car fanatics.
Cage stepped into the $20 million club with this film and he is the only one who has anything to do. Vinnie Jones has a supporting role as The Sphinx, one of the stupidly-monikered crew who also happens to be mute. But while the hardman acts as something of a curio, it's hardly worth forking over your hard-earned cash for.
