When you walk into a film like this, you know it's not going to test you on any kind of intellectual level. That's a given. But what you do expect it to be is damn funny.
"Nutty Professor II: The Klumps" is harmless enough, but it's certainly not damn funny. It's not even darn funny. It's perfectly decent Hollywood entertainment, well-made, well-paced, and well-acted but there just aren't enough good laughs. Which sort of negates the point.
What is good about "The Klumps" is its ubiquitous leading man, Eddie Murphy. As Sherman Klump, he is once again a loveable fattie, who this time discovers a youth elixir, along with his docile girlfriend Denise (the petitely-schnozzed and amply-bosomed Jackson).
As they prepare to unleash their find upon the world, Sherm must deal with his corpulent and often disgustingly randy family, all played entirely by Eddie (except one, played by the silent Mixon) - as well as a rather half-hearted re-appearance from alter-ego Buddy Love, who wants to steal the credit.
Murphy carries this off, giving each character a life of their own and truly making you believe that there is someone different behind each rotund fizzog.
That in itself is an achievement, but doesn't make up for the fact that the rest of the movie is just plain lazy, falling back on generally non-existent gags and doing his recently rekindled reputation no good at all.
All in all, it seems that they should have concentrated rather more on the comedy and less on patting themselves on the back for the admittedly stand-out makeup effects.
