The screamingly funny "Airplane" soars high on a brilliant DVD release that's a true pleasure to check in to any good movie collection.
It is a film that's had plenty of outings on TV in increasingly tired-looking pan and scan broadcasts. The difference on disc is quite amazing with this comedy masterpiece now fresh and rejuvenated.
A new 5.1 soundtrack has been created, and it's apparent right from the opening titles. The classic John Williams "Jaws" theme fills out the speakers with gleeful menace before the plane zooms overhead into the rears.
The only added feature on this disc (apart from the trailer) is a commentary by producer Jon Davison and the writers and directors Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker. It is more than enough and proves to be a very funny experience. The mood quickly turns to chaos as they deride the special effects, point out little cameos, and reveal that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did the movie to buy a $30,000 rug! Very few DVD commentaries are of interest to anyone other than fans of the particular movie in question, but this one is highly recommended for general entertainment value.
