Up there among the finest musicals ever made is "Singin' in the Rain". You may not need to be told that, but it's worth donating your old VHS copy to the local charity shop and getting hold of the new DVD.
Shot in glorious Technicolor, the rich colour-filled extravagant sets of this movie look fabulous on disc.
Where this DVD disappoints is in the sound department. The 1.0 mono mix is quite adequate, but an opportunity has been missed here. For a movie that is all about the creation of sound and the technical problems of making a 'talkie', this disc is sadly uninspired. Surely the clever thing to do would have been to remix this film into 5.1? It would indicate how sound technology has once again moved on and is further enhancing our favourite movies.
No extra features accompany this disc, although time and trouble has been taken with the chaptering (no less than 60!), so that all you favourite song and dance routines are available at the push of a button. That alone, along with the quality transfer, will make this a must-have DVD for fans.
