"Event Horizon" is one of those movies that elicit a distinct response of either approval or weary groans from those who have seen it. Somewhat derivative, this science fiction shocker does however contain some great moments of suspense, and they work exceptionally well on DVD (with the lights switched off and sarcastic people out of the room).
Unlike the US release, this DVD is anamorphic (a process which carries extra coding to create a more detailed picture on a widescreen TV). It's just as well, as the dark settings, smoke-filled eerie corridors, and strobe effects make for a difficult transfer that Paramount has handled exceptionally well. Detail remains strong in even the creepiest of shadow-filled corridors.
Sub woofer junkies will get a real kick from this disc. Those with sub-standard rumble boxes should beware as this DVD will really gut out the lowest sonic frequencies possible.
The theatrical trailer makes up the only extra, but this does remain an excellent DVD for really pushing the limits of your home set-up.
