"Late Night Shopping" is your first feature - how did you get into film making?
I attended film school briefly in America but it was hands on experience that really taught me about the business. I started at the bottom, working as a production runner on Danny Boyle's "Shallow Grave" and "Trainspotting", and worked on a few commercials. Hanging around film sets and just watching films gives you great ideas. I then did my own short films and documentaries.
How did "Late Night Shopping" come about?
decided to make a low budget film in Scotland, out of season, when it was dark and not many people were working. Jack Lothian (the script writer) was working on this script which didn't need lots of money or daylight since it was based around a group of people who work nights. But, by the time we actually got around to filming it was June, so there was plenty of daylight and gorgeous weather. In the movie there's a golf course scene that's in this tiny town outside Glasgow which is supposed to be very drab and miserable. It turned out to be really hot and sunny. Typical!
How did you meet Jack?
Jack was babysitting for a friend of mine, Sam, and was working on a novel which was terrible but Sam noticed that his dialogue was very funny and encouraged me to talk to him about writing film scripts. The film is as much Jack's as it is mine and the night jobs shown in the film are loosely based on Jack's own experience. But essentially we both wanted to make a film that was different to the other British films being shown at the moment and something we'd both go and see.
What's next?
Jack and I have three scripts on the go at the moment which are up for grabs, so hopefully we'll get some interest out of one of those. There's also been talk of an American TV spin off series of "Late Night Shopping" which I have absolutely no objection too. It's a story that has no relevance geographically.
"Late Night Shopping" is out in UK cinemas on Friday 22nd June 2001.
