Prepare for some "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" courtesy of a fabulous two-disc DVD set.
There's no doubting that the picture transfer of the movie to disc is excellent. The many exiting visual effects look pin sharp and the detail is excellent. Occasional dark scenes look a little grainy, but this is still a superb effort.
DTS aficionados will love the 5.1 track on the disc. Any time aliens are near, the sub woofer ripples with strong powerful bas effects. Often just as effective is the Dolby Digital mix. It relays the surrounding helicopters and rolling thunder of the final 30 minutes with great verve.
Fans may initially be disappointed that there's not an audio commentary, but it's hard to imagine how the incredible 100-minute documentary on the second disc doesn't cover all the bases. It splits into eight comprehensive sections and includes interviews with many of the cast and crew, including plenty from Steven Spielberg.
Spielberg touches upon his regret of showing the inside of the craft for the 'Special Edition' release. That scene is one of 11 that form the deleted scene section. If you watch all of the material on disc two, there's little doubt that you won't be quite an expert on the film by the end of it.
