Previously available on an extra-features-free rental DVD, the darkly humorous horror flick "Lake Placid" chomps onto a retail disc with a few extra tricks on offer.
Picture quality is superb. The scenery around the lake is very fresh looking and the many darker night-time scenes are bristling with detail.
A good sound mix can really add extra chills to a horror flick, and the 5.1 effort on this DVD delights in doing just that. Subtle atmospherics wreathe the lakeside settings in eerie rustlings only to be shattered with shock effects that add a lot of fun to the movie.
The extra features are a little on the paltry side, although the five-minute 'making of' featurette does communicate some of the humour that went into making the film. Included are cast and crew interviews and some behind-the-scene shots of the mighty animatronic alligator in action. TV trailers and some biographies wrap up a DVD that's hardly packed with extras, but does offer a top notch transfer of this enjoyable film.
