Hannibal DVD (2001)

Here's a two-disc set so massive that you'll definitely need snacks to get through it all. So, settle down with a skull filled with brain and enjoy the epic DVD release of "Hannibal".

Disc One:

Disc one contains the film, and as we've all come to expect from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, the picture quality is excellent. The shadow strewn settings and moody lighting schemes are transferred very well, with high levels of detail throughout.

You get the choice of both a Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 sound mix to watch the film with. The DTS mix certainly isn't short of bass, while the Dolby mix keeps the rears busy with creepy, disturbing effects. If you have the choice though, the DTS track offers very high, uncompressed quality that really impresses.

Also on disc one is an audio commentary by director, Ridley Scott. It's similar to his good effort on the "Gladiator" DVD, in that he deconstructs the film both in a technical and a script sense. He has a clear understanding of how to marry technical innovations with a smooth storyline, and anyone interested in making films should find it useful.

Disc Two:

Disc two offers a load of special features, many of which exploit the capabilities of the DVD format. Perhaps most satisfying is the 'Multi Angle Vignettes' section. You get the choice of either watching a scene with all the available camera angles, or watching an interview with Scott while flicking through storyboard and film footage, or deconstructing the opening title design.

If you're more interested in the film itself, then you should enjoy the five featurettes that cover everything from the pre-production (will they get Anthony Hopkins?), right through to the press launch screenings (oh, they did). Producer Dino De Laurentis is present in all of them, and is the real star of the show with his straight-talking and amusing anecdotes.

There's more! A lot more in fact, with over 19 TV spots, trailers, stills galleries and a fascinating poster design section, but worth mentioning is the deleted and alternate scenes section. Ridley Scott provides commentary for all 14 scenes, including the alternate ending, where he discusses what he felt was missing from the rather more sedate original denouement.
