Contains moderate violenceAfter the Swiss Alps, the Greek islands and London, the latest European locale to get a Bollywood look in is Russia. Set against the majestic backdrop of St Petersburg, Lucky pairs 18-year-old newcomer Sneha Ullal with established heartthrob Salman Khan to play two young Indians caught up amidst an unexpected Russian revolt. Beautifully shot, this innocent musical romance is as snow white as its landscape.
Ullal plays Lucky Negi, the teenage daughter of a civil servant based at the Indian embassy in St Petersburg, who, on the way to school one day, is forced to escape a political uprising in the city. Dodging rebels out to eliminate the Russian government, Lucky meets fellow refugee Aditya Sekhri (Khan), the sophisticated, handsome and much older son of the Indian ambassador to Russia. The couple have less than 48 hours - and only one warm jacket between them - to navigate their way through the icy wilderness back to the embassy's safe haven.
"FRESH PERFORMANCES"
A musical and visual feast, Lucky is a valiant attempt at creating top-grade commercial Hindi cinema without relying on stale formulas. The only place Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru's script falters is in its use of lazy short cuts; for example, ex-military man turned tracker Pindidas Kapoor (Chakraborty) conveniently pops up and rescues the protagonist out of tight spots. But despite the script's shortcomings, Khan and Ullal's fresh performances and Russia's winter wonderland will leave you wishing you were a comrade on their enchanted expedition.
