White Noise: The Light (2007)
15Contains supernatural horror

Ditching most of the EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) mumbo jumbo of the staggeringly successful Michael Keaton original, White Noise: The Light should have been called White Noise: Unplugged. Nathan Fillion (Slither) leads the cast as Abe Dale, whose Near Death Experience gives him the ability to tap into the spirit world with (you guessed it) disastrous consequences. A sequel in name only, this risible, cheapo chiller filler couldn't scare a nervous dormouse.

In the original White Noise, Michael Keaton turned on, tuned out and dropped dead after discovering messages from the afterlife in television static. Here, the idea gets a very different spin, with Fillion's bereaved family man given the power to save those who are about to die. Playing God is dangerous though, especially once Abe realises that anyone he saves will be possessed by the Devil on the third day. There's only one thing to do: kill them before their 72 hours are up. Sadly that also includes his new squeeze, perma-grinning nurse Sherry (Katee Sackoff).

"STAY AWAY FROM THE LIGHT"

There's a shocking nihilism haunting the edges of this multiplex filler, but director Patrick Lussier bottles the dark potential for yet another "I see dead people" tale. Fillion's not much help either, poring over ancient Greek texts about the Number of the Beast while wrinkling his brow. He looks like someone grappling with a fiendishly difficult Sudoku puzzle. Faced with the choice between a ballsy, truly horrific finale or a box office friendly fudge, White Noise: The Light takes the money and runs. Surely a horror movie shouldn't be afraid of scaring us? Our advice? Don't go into The Light...

White Noise: The Light is released in UK cinemas on Friday 5th January 2007.
