When the war had begun, my youngest brother, David, had been just one year old. During the war, bananas were rationed and we didn't have any for over six years. Once the war had finished, and David was around 7, we were finally be able to have bananas again. My mother handed him a banana and he just stared at it. Once my mother noticed this strange behaviour, she asked him what he was doing. He replied that he didn't know how to eat it! As he had only been small when the war began, he had never seen a banana and didn't know if you ate it with the skin on or off, or even how to peel it1
