I was in the forecourt of the petrol station in 1939, when a regular customer came in and informed us that war was declared. It was a sunny day, it didnt register very much, as I was just a teenager. Two days later a fire officer arrived from Fulham Fire station and locked up all the petrol pumps, and declared that the garage was closed; it was taken over for the civil defence.
I suddenly realised what the War was all about when the first air raids started after some time. The furniture factory ( during the war they started to make War equipment like gas masks)I worked for got bombed, the roof was blown off- it was in Wandsworth. Then my house was bombed too, I myself was blown out of my bed in my home, the window frame hanging around my neck!.
Then I went into the army, fought in the Mediterranean region. I finished the war in Innsbruck in Austria. Then I drove all the way through Europe to Calais in france, and happily landed in Dover. After such active War years it was difficult to settle in England, it took almost two years for me to re-adjust.
