Eric joined the Territorial Army in 1937 and was posted to 249 Battery R.A. (anti-aircraft) of the 80th Regiment in Reading. He was called up on 24th August 1939.

He was posted to an Irish Battery and went overseas in September 1940. The convoy took six weeks to reach Suez, as the speed of the ships was governed by the speed of the slowest vessel. Within a month he was sent to Cairo Hospital for a mastoid operation. When he had recovered he was sent to Base Camp and then posted to 13th Light Anti-aircraft Battery, where he stayed for four and half years. However, he went to many different places; to Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, North Africa and finally Naples. He arrived back in England in 1945. Eric was never in the front line fighting but always behind the lines.
