The date was March 24th 1945 and with many other members of the 6th British Airborne Division I was en route to the Rhine Crossing or as it was known, Operation Varsity. This proved to be the largest single drop airborne operation of WW11.

My wireless equiped Jeep and trailer along with two motorcycles had been loaded the pevious day. The final navigational turning point before crossing the Channel was above RAF Hawkinge.

That is why, sitting in a Horsa glider towed at 140 mph at a height of 2,500' by a Stirling, I possibly flew over the house in which I subsequently came to live.

I was very interested to read about your flight of destiny over Folkestone!

I am the Local Studies Librarian at Folkestone Library and we are organising a series of events to gather World War II stories from the Shepway District.

I wonder if you would be interested in attending one of the sessions below?

Not all participants want to register for the site for themselves but it is great to introduce people like your yourself who have done just that.

We have a very rich collection of historical material for the whole of the district around Folkestone.

We are hoping to use resources from our collection as part of WWII Reminiscence sessions in our network of 9 libraries.

There will be an hour long session at each library (see programme below.) The main aim of the sessions will be to trigger your memories & encourage you to write them down.

As part of the sessions we will be giving people a taste of what you can do with this wonderful website!

With regard to Bob Mortimer's Flight over Folkestone, Ted Iggulden of Seagrave Road recorded this in his diary that he kept through-out the war. I beleive he has been in touch with Bob on this matter.
