One memory is of an allied plane breaking upin mid air and the wreckage coming down on the playing fields of Caistor Secondary Modern School. Parachutes drifted out and the crew landed a long way from Caistor. I was at the Junior School at the time and I was walking up to the other school when this happened and when we got there the fusalage was on fire and flashes were shooting upwards which was the ammunition exploding. For years after there was a window in the boys toilet that had a bullet hole in the glass.
One day me and Barry ,my friend, saw an aircraft in trouble. It was losing height and it disappeared behind the trees at Pillar Wood near Caistor. We ran to the Fire Station and told them our story and they were not interested. We decided to go and find it. After walking perhaps 5 miles we found it near Limber and there were some guards round it. They gave us some souveniers of the wreckage including some fruit cake. Barry and I were about 8 years old at the time.
