I am 80 years old and life is good, but my memory is not what it used to be and I have difficulty recalling all my memories.
Thinking back to the war, I am reminded of my childhood, living in Portslade. I was an only child, living with my mother and father who worked very long hours in the local Co-op as a baker. My mum was very ill and was nursed at home. I did what I could to help my father. I recall my mum being very loving towards me, but sadly she died when I was about 7.....
Now I am thinking about my Irish step-mother who entered my life when I was about 10. She didn't like me and used to beat me with a stick. This happened often, but i didn't want to tell anyone and wanted to make things alright for father's sake.
My step-mother worked as a nurse in Brighton and my neighbour Mrs Budd would look out for me.
My first job was in Tate's Garage where I was to meet my 1st husband, Ernest.
I remember playing with the evacuees from London - I had relatives living there who were very kind, but my stepmother didn't like me going to spend time with them.
I also went out (without my stepmother's knowledge!) to dances in The Regent, Brighton. My favourite dress was a pink and green silk affair - the young men looking so smart in suits, the live music and lemonade (no alcohol!), walking home to Portslade because we had no spare money for the train....
My wartime memories? The blackouts and taped windows, planes flying overhead.... although there was rationing, I never went without. The celebrations when war was over: parties at friends houses - I went to as many as possible, I thought it was wonderful!
My second husband and I have 3 grown up children, but i don't tend to think about or share my past memories, I like to put it behind me. Life is good and I am off to see my grandson marry....
