I was called up to the ATS in early 1943 aged just 20. I did three weeks training at Catterick then I was stationed to Nottingham. I'd been there just a week when I celebrated my 21st birthday. Three Scots girls I was sharing with spotted the greetings cards on my shelf and dragged me to the RAF HQ in Aucknall. They got me drunk on whisky and had to carry me home. That's Scottish girls for you!
When VE Day was announced we started drinking straight away. We spent the day in the NAAFI playing bridge. Nottingham was full of Yanks at the time and I fell in love with various servicemen during the war; a Pole, an Australian (who couldn't dance) and finally a Scot who I married!
