We travelled 200 miles from Khartoum to Kassala in East Sudan. I travelled without a water bottle because there were none available, and we slept on the sand under the thorn trees, where we hung our clothes, and in an air raid we got under the lorries, sometimes at night under the planes.

I say this because a recent TV interview with army servicemen complained that their barracks were below standard.

From this we were upgraded and we slept in native mud huts in the village of Kassala in which all the grubs and bugs fell on us, so much so that we went to sleep outside.

In conclusion, we had Gladiators, Fighters and Hurricane Mark 1 fighters with wooden props. This was a famous squadron who eventually went to Crete, and were captured by the German paratroopers at the end of the war in Crete.
