I was about nine in the war but I can remember my father ploughing at Ranscombe Farm, Mount Caburn, near Lewes.

The army was using the hill for rifle practice in the butts at the time.

The bullets were hitting the flints and ricocheting over the top and Dad went to his employer Mr Miles and said it was too dangerous to carry on.

Mr Miles went to see the Commanding Officer and said "Either your men stop firing or my man will stop working" so they stopped firing.
