Janet Wheatman tells Elaine Taylor her World War II memories at the Tullie House 60th WWII Anniversay Event in Carlisle.

I was 5 陆 at the time of the war and evacuated from Birkenhead into North Wales. The train stopped at Penryndydreth. We all had to stand in a row and they checked us for nits, scabies etc. I was chosen by a couple who lived in Gellilydan and had a nice time with them. They spoiled me - they had no children of their own. We kept in touch until they died.

Then we went to the school, and although they integrated the English children into the school, we had to do all our lessons in Welsh, so I became fluent in Welsh. I stayed in Wales until I was 9.

After 2 years, my mother came out and we rented a house there.

All the children had their tonsils and adenoids out in the actual school and I remember us all being laid out in the school hall. We were allowed 2 jellies each after the operation but normally we couldn鈥檛 get jelly due to the rations.

When we came back to Birkenhead it was exam time at school. We couldn鈥檛 do the exams though as we couldn鈥檛 write in English - only in Welsh. We didn鈥檛 know how to spell English words
