I was an evacuee on a farm in Montgomeryshire to get away from the heavy bombing of Birmingham I remember clearly June the 6th 1944. When the farmer鈥檚 eldest son John visited and excitedly asked 鈥渉ad we heard the news鈥? 鈥 No! The accumulator is not charged.鈥 Was the reply. Radios in those days had to have a battery (accumulator) charged up regularly or they wouldn鈥檛 work. John connected a bicycle lamp battery to the radio and we heard the one o鈥檆lock news. That the allies had landed in France (Normandy) D鈥 Day.
