When war was declared i was in my uncles pub and until 1942 I was a schoolboy,and, living in the country watched the various towns locally receiving the attention of the Luftwaffe.After school I went into industry and in my spare time was a member of the local A.T.C. and at 18 joined the R.A.F.as aircrew.Unfortunately the R.A.F.had too many bodies and it was decided that I would be of more use to the Army.Cosequently on 7-12 44 I found myself at Bodmin as a u/t squaddie.after full Infantry training I transferredto the Glider Pilot Regt.where after 6 weeks on Salisbury Plain I then did an E.F.T.S.course at Panshanger, followed by conversion to gliders at Croughton Brize Norton,and Elsham Wolds.I was then posted to N Squadron the Glider Pilot Regt. Luckily the atom bomb had ended the war so after a few months and my secondment was over and it was back to the Infantry.Luckily I got a posting to Soldier Magazine using civilian billets in the middle of Hamburg.Here I had a wonderful but very busy time both in the office and travellinground Germany.Unfortunately all good things come to an end and in January 1948 I said goodbye to the army and joined the Civvy St brigade.
