May 8th 1945.
I was living in Canada during the war, before I moved to Scotland. One day, when I was in my first year of primary school, we heard the fire engines go past the school.
5 minutes later they came past again. The teacher suddenly ran out of the room and came back two minutes later in tears. She said we could all go home.
When I left the school I discovered my mother coming to meet me and she was crying. I said "What's wrong?" She said "the war's over!" I noticed other mothers crying as well. I said "Well, if the war's over why is everybody crying?" She couldn't answer. She just gave me a hug.
