My sister's husband, Jack, was on leave from the navy. While visiting his mother's house, he saw a British plane crash into the field behind the home. He rushed out to help the piolet (Cyril Barton) and pulled him to safety, from the plane. This was a brave task,as the plane was on fire, ready to blow up. Jack thought the man was dead at first, but wasn't allowed to say so as it had to be certifyed by the medics. The piolet survived. Years later, a housing estate was built on the site where the plane had crashed. It was named after the piolet, and a plaque was ercted to commemorate those involved. Because Jack had helped save the piolet, my sister, Cathy, was invited to attend the opening ceremony, and was given a book about the event. The estate is called Barton Park, built on where the colliery pit office used to be when the mine was open.
